Storage Hints
- Use shelving to maximize storage space
- Store items you will need more often at the front of your unit
- Pack your space leaving a centre aisle for easy access to all items.
- Cover all your stored possessions with a light plastic sheet.
- Avoid storing anything that attracts pests.
- Valuables such as electronic equipment should be placed towards the rear of your storage place.
Boxes
- We sell packing boxes, bubble wrap, tape and covers - call 1300 30 30 28 or visit our office.
- Label boxes on several sides, seal completely with packing tape.
- Pack snugly to prevent collapsing when stacked.
- Use uniform size boxes and stack them shoulder high to maximize your storage space.
- Do not place boxes directly on concrete floors, but use pallets or skids to prevent moisture absorption.
Books and documents
- Pack books flat to protect their spines.
- Do not pack fragile items in the same box with books.
- Do not pack too many documents in one box as they are quite heavy.
Bicycles, lawn mowers and other metal items
- To prevent rusting, wipe all metal surfaces with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil.
- Drain any petrol inside machinery.
Mirrors and pictures
- Wrap them with paper pads or use mirror boxes.
- Never store these items flat.
Refrigerator and freezer
- These should be thoroughly dry and stored with its door slightly ajar.
- Some goods can be stacked on top of stoves, refrigerators, and freezers. Make sure that stoves and cooking equipment are cleaned before they are stored. Use the extra space inside.
Bedding, clothing, curtains, drapes and linens
- Clothing, curtains, and drapes should be stored on hangers.
- If hanging cartons are not available, such items should be carefully folded and stored in dresser drawers or cedar chests along with bedding and linens.
- Food crumbs or stains should be removed before storage.
Dishes and glassware
- Place a layer of packing inside the bottom and the top of boxes containing glassware. All glass items should be individually wrapped.
- Wrapped glasses should be placed near the top of cartons. Again, fill all pockets with packing.
- Do not place heavy items on boxes containing glassware.
Mattress and furniture
- Place a pallet, corrugated cardboard mat, or plastic sheet on the floor and stand sofas and mattress on end.
- Disassemble beds and tables and wrap table legs in paper. Mark all pieces for easy reassembly. If a table will not disassemble, place padding on the floor and place the table on its top with the legs pointing up.
- Use dresser tops for stacking cartons and dresser drawers for lines or small, delicate items.
- Keep upholstery off the floor. Most lightweight chairs can be stacked seat to seat or placed upside down on tables, which cannot be disassembled. Finally place a light cotton dust cover on your furniture.
